Ceramics by María Manrique and Francisco Cortijo

Ceramics were used by Cortijo from the beginning of his work until the eighties of the 20th century, when he gave way to infographics. It often has a strong popular influence. It depicts familiar or political characters and has a strong influence of popular uses and customs. In this case, these are toys inspired by the old “tin” toys.

These toys were made in the workshop on Calle Santa Ana, Seville. At that time, Cortijo created the name “Cerámica Popular del Sur” (Popular Ceramics of the South), which would mark all his subsequent work. He was assisted by María Manrique, at that time a fine arts student who would always maintain a close relationship with the family.
